Is this normal for a GI specialist to do?

Ok so I went to the GI specialist today and after I told him what was going on he told me to get dressed in that little hospital gown and for me just to leave my bra and underwear on and for the open part to be in the front and not the back. So when I did this and he came back in he checked my pulse and was feeling my neck and throat. Then I laid down on the table and he listened to my stomach and stuff. I was just wondering why I had to take my shirt off. Couldn't he have just raised it up and listened to my stomach like that? Is this normal for GI specialist to do? He didn't say anything perverted or do anything perverted and he didn't come across like a perv so I was just wondering
